  • Mecir was a pitcher for Eckerd’s Baseball team from 1989-1993.
  • Even in high school, Mecir was known for his athletic abilities in basketball, track, and baseball. At the age of 18 he received the Carl Yastrzemski Award as a resident of Long Island.
  • He was named to the All Sunshine State Conference Team for two consecutive seasons.
  • After his time at Eckerd, Mecir was drafted to play professional baseball with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and briefly for the Boston Red Sox before being drafted by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1997.
  • Mecir became the Devil Rays most reliable middle reliever with an ERA of 3.24 and 45 strikeouts in the second half of the 1998 season.
  • In 2003, Mecir received the Tony Conigliaro Award, which is given to a player who overcomes adversity to succeed in baseball. Being born with two “club feet,” Mecir still became an effective Major League pitcher.
  • He retired from the Florida Marlins in 2005 as a right-handed pitcher.
  • He was inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame in 2008.
  • Mecir currently lives in Kildeer, Illinois with his wife and three kids. He works as a motivational speaker and youth baseball coach.
  • Mecir was inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame in 2016.
