ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In its third consecutive match, the Eckerd men's tennis team came away victorious in a non-conference contest with Post University.
Singles play powered EC (6-2) on Friday as the Tritons took all six points after dropping one of the three matchups in doubles, spoiling the team's chance for a third consecutive sweep.
Head coach
Ben Maxwell credited his players' mental toughness for their success against the Eagles (2-4) as a tennis can turn quickly into a mind game when balls do not go in one's favor.
"Some may not have played their best, but we still went out and got the job done," he said. "All of the guys are getting mentally stronger each day."
Victor Appelqvist and
James McManus had to endure three-setters at first and fourth singles respectively. Appelqvist dropped set one in a close 7-5 decision but took the second set, 6-3. The match was decided in a third set tiebreaker since EC had already claimed the team victory, and Appelqvist made the win bigger with a 10-8 decision in his favor. McManus split the first two sets 6-2 each and played a full third set that went the distance, winning 7-6 (7-0).
Jonathan Cheng recorded the biggest decision with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. He and
Eddie Lewis partnered together for a convincing 8-1 win at third doubles while Appelqvist and
Yosua Husodo teamed-up for an 8-2 win of their own.
Eckerd returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a road trip to Melbourne as the Tritons take on the Florida Tech Panthers in a Sunshine State Conference matchup. FIT enters the match ranked No. 40 in the ITA Men's Tennis DII National Rankings. The contest is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
