ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College baseball team improved their record as they defeated Warner University on Saturday, February 6th, at the Turley Athletic Complex. The Tritons defeated the Royals by one run in both games, 12-11 in the first game, and 9-8 in the second.
The Tritons jumped out first with the lead in the first game, with
Stephen Pelc hitting a single down to right field, bringing home
Joe Dabah in the second inning.
David Regidor then followed on with a fielder's choice, but Warner's defense was unlucky getting Pelc out. With Triton base runners on third and first,
Wess Hollins brought home Pelc as he sacrificed himself for an out to make the score 2-0. With the Tritons continuing to dominate the Royals in the second inning,
Matt Abraham connected with a two-run home run over the right-centerfield field, bring the Tritons to a 4-0 lead.
The Royals soon answered back, having a homerun of their own in the top of the third inning, two back-to-back doubles, and a single to bring the score to 4-3. Both were at battle the entire game, scoring in almost every inning but one.
With the Tritons up by two going into the final inning, Warner took advantage of the Triton's pitching, as they got runners on base by a batter being hit by a pitch, and two walks. With back-to-back base hits by the Royals, they were able to take the lead from the Tritons by two runs. The Tritons answered back, with
Chris Clinton and
Dan Branca both getting on base and taking advantage of passed balls by the Warner catcher.
Joe Dabah's sacrifice fly to centerfield brought home Clinton and advanced pinch runner
Dan Capra to bring the Tritons one run to tie the game up. To make an exciting ending, Hollins ripped a single to the left fielder, bringing home two runners, to make the Eckerd victorious, 12-11.
The winning pitcher for the first game was
Robbie Nabers, who pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and one walk.
Johnny Lancaster started the game, pitching five innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, five walks, and struck out five.
Anthony Katchuk and
Jay Moroff also pitched, Katchuk pitching two innings and striking out one and Moroff pitching 1.1 innings and striking out two.
The second game ended in the same way as the first game did, just by one run. The Tritons jumped out in the first inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run bomb that was connected by
Oliver Killoren. The Royals threatened to come back in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs to tie the score up 8-8. The Eckerd offense answered back with their own run in the bottom of the seventh, as four Triton players made it on base without a single out. To end the game, Dabah singled up the middle to bring home Clinton to make the score 9-8, leaving the Tritons victorious for the day. Killoren had a stellar performance at the plate for the Tritons during the second game, going 3-for-3 with two of his hits being homers and having four RBIs.
Starting pitcher
Jake Wilder pitched five innings, allowing eight hits with five runs, walking two, and striking out two batters.
Chris Ayral came in for 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, and one strike out. Finally, Adam Shapiro closed the game out, pitching 0.1 innings, with only one hit.
