KINGS POINT, NY - The Eckerd women's sailing team completed the first day of the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championships, sitting in 14th place with 152 points through six races at the US Merchant Marine Academy.
Eden Nykamp skippered the A division with Amelia Johnson as crew. The duo had a strong start with a fourth-place finish in race one. The tandem added two seventh-place finishes on the day in races two and five.
Nykamp and Johnson had a strong start to race five, pulling into fourth place. After falling behind, the pair regained ground for a top-10 finish, coming in seventh. Through six races, Nykamp and Johnson rank ninth in the A division with 56 points.
Lily Schwartz skippered the B division with Sophie Leduc (1-2) and Tess Levanway (3-6) as crew. The B division's best race came in race three, as Schwartz and Levanway placed 11th. After the third race, the sailors came in on a wind delay before resuming 30 minutes later.
Eckerd sits 17th in the B division with 96 points.
Bowdoin (Maine) leads the Western Division with 40 points, including one first-place finish and placing in the top eight in all races. Yale (Conn.) leads the Eastern Division with one first-place finish and top 10 finishes.
Eckerd returns to the water tomorrow for the final day of the national semi-finals, beginning at 10:00 AM.
