Tritons Drop Duals to Division I Opponents at Tampa Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team dropped a pair of duals against NCAA Division I schools on the first day of the Tampa Invitational on Friday, falling to Jacksonville (Fla.) 3-2 before losing to Tennessee-Martin, 4-1.

In the opening match, Eckerd nearly came away with the win over the Dolphins after taking victories at the No. 2 and 4 draws. In the No. 2 position, Arielle Erillo and Sydney Case came back from a one-set deficit to win the second, 21-16, and the third, 15-8.

At the No. 4 draw, Fernanda Reis and Payton Meader took care of Mallory Mattingly and Kathryn Wristen in straight sets (21-12, 21-19).

The Tritons came close to pick up the decisive third point in the No. 3 draw after Kira Hahn-Ventrell and Ivey Andrews won the first set, 22-20. However, the duo lost the next two sets 21-16 and 15-9.

Against UT-Martin, Eckerd scored a win at the No. 1 draw as Stephanie Bogda and Rachel Machovec took out Hannah Phillips and Brooke Gyori 21-19 and 21-15. However, the Tritons fell at the Nos. 2-4 draws and had to forfeit at the No. 5 draw.

Eckerd (0-6) plays twice tomorrow taking on Coastal Carolina at noon and Tampa at 4:00 PM.
