ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team played host to Quincy (Ill.) University in a dual match at the Fred Bullard Courts on Monday afternoon, and the Tritons grounded the Hawks with a 9-0 victory.
The Tritons (5-2) opened the competition hot with dominant doubles performance at all three positions, dropping just six games total.
James McManus and
Frazier Springfield had the biggest doubles victory of the day with an 8-1 decision at the No. 2 slot.
When it came time for singles play, the Hawks (4-4) were unable to prevent the sweep, but Pat Kuhle nearly pulled off a come-from-behind victory at first singles in the last match off the courts.
Victor Appelqvist convincingly took the first set, 6-2, but Kuhle used a powerful serve to take the second, 7-5, forcing a third set tiebreaker. Appelqvist fell behind 6-3 early in the tiebreaker, but he rallied to take the set and match, 15-13.
"I'm proud of his fight," said head coach
Ben Maxwell. "It's tough to stay focused during such a tight match after winning the first set pretty handedly."
The other five singles positions were decided in straight sets. Springfield narrowly took set one at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-3) but powered his way to a 6-0 second.
James McManus and
Eddie Lewis did not drop a game in their matches.
Maxwell is excited with the way his team has been growing early in the season and is excited to continue competition.
"We are improving with every match and look forward for Post on Friday," he said.
That match against Post is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start from the Bullard Courts.
