ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team won its third straight match on Thursday, picking up its first sweep of the season with a 5-0 win over Stevenson (Md.) University.
The sweep was the first in the history of the second-year program as the Tritons (4-4) took wins in 10 of the 12 sets played in the match.
In the No. 1 position, the tandem of
Tjasa Kotnik and
Kaitlyn Sibson won for the seventh time this season with a dominant 21-13, 21-11 defeat of Kristen Brooks and Samantha Perillo. It was also their third straight straight-sets win.
Madison Whiting and
Arielle Erillo followed suit in the No. 2 position with a 21-9, 21-17 win over Annika Schwartz and Megan Hren while
Gabriella Reis and
Mackenzie Redner also swept in the No. 4 spot over Deanna Bradbury and Katie McGuire by scores of 21-17 and 21-11.
Stephanie Bogda and
Kali Boatwright won in three sets in the No. 3 position, rolling past Sara Bollinger and Lauren Weaver in the third set, 15-6. Bogda and Boatwright won the first set, 21-17, before dropping the second, 15-21.
After dropping the first set, 17-21,
Savanna Cary and
Haylee Bilbray rallied to take the next two sets by scores of 21-19 and 15-3 to improve to 2-0 as a team and finish off the sweep.
Maison Burr and
Rachel Cornatzer also picked up a win in a non-counting contest, 21-15 and 21-12.
The Tritons will aim to extend their winning streak to four on Wednesday, March 23, when they host Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) at 1:30 PM.
