Box Score Tritons Take Home Win on First Day of ClassicST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College women's basketball team opened up the first day of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic with a 68-60 win over the University of Puerto Rico – Bayamon on Friday night.
Trine Kasemagi was dominant down low from the jump helping her team to an early 8-2 lead. The freshman was putting in layups and pulling down rebounds throughout the first half.
Rana Thomas stretched the Tritons lead to 11 driving the lane for a layup with an assist from
Kayla Bowlin.
Margaret Sundberg hit a deep three to go up 30-17 with 3:11 left on the clock.
Jordyn Alexander and
Sarah Ammons both hit shots in the final minutes to take a 12 point lead into halftime up 33-21.
Thomas and Kasemagi combined for 21 first half points. The Tritons knocked down their first half free throws going 8 for 11 from the line.
Kasemagi and Victoria vine started the second half with buckets in back-to-back possessions, but UPR would not go away. A three pointer by Bayamon's Madelyn Velazquez cut the Tritons lead to seven. Puerto Rico free throws brought the score to 50-49 with Eckerd clinging to a one point lead.
Ivana Grbic brought the ball down the floor on the following possession and hit a clutch jumper to put EC back up by three. Thomas hit a three from the corner pocket at the five minute mark to go up 60-51. UPR was not able to get back in the game and the Tritons walked away with the 68-60 victory.
"We finished the game the way we wanted to," said Head Coach,
Paul Honsinger. "We were able to make plays down low and hit our free throws when the game got close."
Kasemagi finished with a career high 26 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Thomas went 6 for 7 from the free throw line and totaled 19 points. Bowlin dished out six assists
while scoring five points of her own.
The Tritons (4-1) will face off with Southern New Hampshire (3-2) on the final day of the Classic on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
