HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Ieva Korzane scored 30 points and
Emma Egan added a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Eckerd women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an 85-69 win over the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Friday.
The Eagles led for the first four minutes of the contest until Korzane's three-pointer gave the Tritons their first lead at 7-6 early on. A back-and-forth contest ensued, with the two teams trading the lead three times before Embry-Riddle collected eight of the last 11 points in the period to take a 16-13 lead into the second.
Kailyn Terrell's triple with 51 seconds remaining stopped a 6-0 run for the Eagles.
Eckerd scored the first 15 points of the second quarter, seeing six points apiece from both Korzane and Egan during that span. Embry-Riddle did not score its first points until over five minutes in, which sparked a 7-0 surge to cut the gap from 12 to five. A pair of three-pointers from
Lisa Michaelsen in the final three minutes helped get the Eckerd lead back up into double figures, and the team took a 38-27 advantage into the halftime break. The Tritons out-scored the Eagles 25-11 in the second period alone.
Egan collected the first two points of the second half to deliver the largest lead for the Tritons for the time being. The two teams traded baskets over the course of the next five minutes, keeping the margin between them around the 10-point range. Korzane put in the last six points of the frame for Eckerd to help boost the gap out to 16 at 62-46 with just 10 minutes to play. Embry-Riddle got within nine through the first 90 seconds of the final period, but the teams eventually played to a 23-23 deadlock in the final 10 minutes to keep the final margin at 16.
Both Korzane and Egan hit 11-20 from the floor, while Egan added six assists and five steals to her double-double. Michaelsen connected on four of her seven three-point attempts to finish with 16 for the game. The Tritons forced 18 Eagles turnovers, 12 of which came via steals.
Eckerd will face No. 2 seeded Union tomorrow night at 6 p.m. ET.
