Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - It was a great turnout in the McArthur Center on Monday night for the Eckerd College women's basketball home opener with the Tritons defeating UPR-Mayaguez, 85-50.
EC came out shooting to start the contest getting on the board first with a 6-0 lead.
Sarah Ammons knocked down a three pointer to increase her team's lead, 11-2.
Trine Kasemagi grabbed a defensive rebound and after a couple passes finished off the play with a layup to put the Tritons up, 28-14.
Ashley Fyle went to the line with less than 30 seconds on the clock and drilled home both free throws to extend the lead by 26.
Elisabeth Giegerich capitalized on a steal by
Margaret Sundberg for a layup to send her team into halftime up, 53-25.
As a team, EC shot 66.7 percent in the first half while out rebounding UPR, 22-10.
The Janes would not go down without a fight shooting deep three pointers trying to get back into the game. UPR managed to cut the lead to 21 with 10:46 remaining in the second half before the Tritons opened the game back up with a scoring surge.
Rana Thomas and Sundberg knocked home back-to-back threes in the following two possessions. Eckerd would end the game on a 16-2 run spanning the final nine minutes of the contest to come away with the 85-50 victory.
The Tritons finished the game with four players in double digits as Thomas led the way with 17 points. Ammons, Kasemagi and
Kayla Bowlin finished right behind her with 15, 13 and 13 points respectively.
Eckerd moves to 2-1 on the season with the team looking toward the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Eckerd College. EC will take on UPR – Bayamon on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and return to the court on Saturday to face off with Southern New Hampshire University at 3:00 p.m.
