MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball program concluded the regular season on the road with a doubleheader as Barry University prevailed in both games, 10-2 (6 innings) and 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
In games No. 55 and 56 of the spring campaign at Buccaneer Field, the Tritons finished the year with a 19-37 overall record and four wins in the Sunshine State Conference standings.
“I'm proud of our team for how they competed and for their efforts all year,” said EC Head Coach
Josh Beauregard. “We had not only one of the winningest seasons in school history, but we were able to break many single-season team records. That has us excited for what the team can accomplish next season.”
The 19 wins compiled by the Tritons equals the program's second-best single-season win total in school history, matching the squad from 1998. In 2009, Eckerd posted a program-best 21 victories.
Beauregard also moved closer to the century mark coaching milestone in his sixth season at the helm, currently sitting at 90 wins in his career.
The Bucs capped the regular season with a 32-18 overall record and a 19-5 mark in league play. Britney Pugh helped out her own cause in the pitcher's circle with a walkoff home run in the opener before Alexis Yohe fired a two-hitter in the finale.
Yohe struck out seven to complete the doubleheader and was credited with the win in Friday's series opener, but she had to battle against a strong effort from EC junior starter
Whitney Bernier.
Bernier allowed just one earned run on seven hits in her bid for win No. 10 on the season. She stranded runners on second and third base to end a threat in the fourth frame and would finish with three scoreless innings.
Barry was able to scratch out a run in the first and third innings while Yohe allowed hits to freshman
Kaycie Duncan and sophomore
Brittany Mitchell.
Duncan also singled in the opener and edged out teammate
Kara Oberer for the final team lead in batting average, .360 to .359. Oberer went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and run scored in game one to raise her average a few points from last night.
Duncan ultimately led the team in hits (59) and runs batted in (38). Oberer guided the Tritons in home runs (12), doubles (12), runs (42) and slugging percentage (.679).
The Tritons scored a pair of runs thanks to RBI hits by Oberer and Duncan in succession against Pugh in the top half of the fifth down by an eight-run margin.
Today's conclusion also marked the end of the successful careers by the senior class of
Kristen Schurr,
Sarah Agnew and
Logan Rohrbach.
