Sailing Program Battles Cold Temperatures During Another Crowded Weekend

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Scattered throughout Charleston, S.C., Annapolis, Md., Winter Park and its home base in St. Petersburg, the Eckerd College coed and women's sailing programs continued to progress through the spring in another crowded weekend of bookings.

The Tritons hosted the Eckerd Intersectional, competed in a stacked field at the Graham Hall Team Race, sent a fleet to the South Points Series #2 and entered in the Charleston Women's Open.

EC finished fifth of nine at the both the EC Intersectional and Charleston Women's Open, enjoyed a runner-up finish at the South Points regatta hosted by Rollins College and settled in 14th in the team race format.

The Tritons improved one spot in the team standings spanning both days of the EC Intersectional and Charleston Women's Open.

The College of Charleston sailed to team wins in three of the four regattas the Tritons participated in.

EC sailed to a 2-11 record during the first day of the team race event before wrapping up Sunday with a 3-6 head-to-head mark. Intermittent snow flurries fell along the Severn River, but the 16-team round robin was ideal with the conditions.

The Tritons were represented by Wes Byrne, Tony Collins, Walker Banks, Jessica Resnick, Amanda Smith and Ann Williamson, in Maryland.

The College of Charleston assembled a 20-2 record against the competition to win team honors.

At the familiar venue of Crab Bank, again the College of Charleston was able to win top credentials in the women's competition. The
Tritons were right in the middle of the pack in another strong field.

The College of Charleston again stole the show in Boca Ciega Bay as rain and cloudy conditions fell over the water on Saturday. A strong effort from Charleston's “B” division led to a comfortable margin from runner-up Long Beach State.
