Softball Rallies Again, Clinches SSC Series Against Lynn University in Friday Doubleheader

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– Following a storybook finish in Thursday night's walk-off affair, the Eckerd College softball program did it again, rallying to stun Lynn University in the late stages of game two to clinch a Sunshine State Conference series in Friday's doubleheader.

EC was edged in game one, 1-0, before coming back to salvage the twinbill split and take two of three games in the series in the finale, 8-5.

Freshman Stephanie Wolfrom keyed a seven-run fifth inning in game two, unloading on a 2-2 offering with a two-run double that rolled to the right-field wall and brought around the tying and go-ahead runs.

The Tritons (17-24, 4-11 SSC) turned the tables on their opponent when faced with a 5-1 deficit and put away the Fighting Knights (17-18, 4-8 SSC) with strong defensive play to record the final three outs.

In game one, Lynn's Missy Montgomery pieced together a no-hit effort through 5 2/3 innings before freshman Kirby Parnell played spoiler and singled in front of home plate on the bunt attempt.

Montgomery would just scatter three more hits in the seven-inning shutout as the Fighting Knights backed her up with the lone run -- unearned -- in the fifth inning.

Following a single by Lynn's Cydney Schmidt, the throw on a sacrifice attempt hit the runner square in the back to put runners at second and third with just one away.

A checked throw back to the runner at third rolled into the outfield grass and back-to-back throwing miscues resulted in the lone run crossing the plate.

EC nearly tied it in the bottom of the seventh on a squeeze attempt with runners on the corners and one out, but senior Kristen Schurr was tagged out on a headfirst slide try and Montgomery induced a groundout to end it.

The only run against the line of junior Whitney Bernier was unearned as she allowed only four hits and permitted just one walk.

Both teams managed four hits apiece in the opener.

The offense opened up in game two as the Fighting Knights looked to be in cruise control after tagging three runs in the second and two more in the fifth.

EC senior Logan Rohrbach escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first turn through the order as all three baserunners to reach in the first were hit by different pitches. Rohrbach buckled down in relief to draw a pair of infield pop-ups and deftly fielded a comebacker to end the early Lynn threat.

After drawing 13 walks last night, the Tritons took the patient approach against Lynn starter Kacey Murray that paid off in the fifth inning.

Freshman Kaycie Duncan and Schurr each drew bases-loaded free passes to drive in runs and sophomore Sabrina Lolo found a weak spot in the left side of the infield to make it a 5-4 Lynn lead.

Duncan drew three of her team's seven walks in game two alone.

That's when Wolfrom delivered the big blow as her double scored both Duncan and Schurr. With EC up 6-5, the hit parade continued as senior Sarah Agnew came off the bench to bloop an RBI single in right and Parnell put the ball on the ground in a fielder's choice situation to complete the damage.

It was three up and three down for Bernier in the top of the seventh as she collected her ninth win this season with 5 1/3 innings pitched in relief to quiet the Fighting Knights down the stretch.

Bernier lowered her ERA to 3.20 and struck out two while allowing just a pair of runs on six hits.

The Tritons take to their home field again next weekend by playing host to No. 13 University of Tampa in a Friday/Saturday SSC series.
