ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Forging through 58-degree temperatures with sporadic gusts that dropped the wind chill, the Eckerd College softball program suffered a setback after being swept by Florida Southern College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 7-4 and 4-0.
The Tritons (10-13, 0-3 SSC) dropped Friday night's series opener at the Turley Athletic Complex by a score of 4-2 against the Moccasins (9-11, 3-0 SSC) to officially open Sunshine State Conference play.
A five-run second inning broke the scoring wide open in game one as the Mocs took advantage of five hits and a pair of errors. An RBI single by Jordan Alexander put the Mocs in the scoring column first, but the inning was extended at an inopportune time.
An infield throwing miscue should have ended the frame, but four unearned runs against junior starter
Whitney Bernier came around to score after.
Bernier was relieved after 1 2/3 innings. She only gave up one earned run in the start.
The Tritons chipped away at the deficit in the fifth with a pair of runs on three hits to break up the shutout bid and force their way back into contention.
A two-out hit-by-pitch absorbed by freshman leadoff hitter
Kirby Parnell set the table for junior
Chelsea Jeffares, who unloaded an RBI double. The next at-bat also produced a run as freshman
Kara Oberer scored Jeffares from second.
EC pushed another run across in the sixth, but had the potential for much more by leaving the bases loaded. Freshman
Stephanie Wolfrom, back from an extended absence due to injury, was beaned with the bases loaded to pick up the crucial RBI.
Hits from freshman
Kaycie Duncan and sophomore
Brittany Mitchell to begin the seventh translated into one run following a throwing error on the infield.
FSC's Chelsea Oglevie blanked the Tritons in game two with a complete-game, eight-hit shutout. She only struck out two, but also allowed no walks.
Oglevie retired eight straight to begin her second start of the weekend series before a two-out single by freshman
Kirby Parnell spoiled the no-hit bid.
The Tritons were unable to advance a runner past second base as Oglevie ended the fourth and sixth innings with a strikeout and fielder's choice groundout in EC's closet scoring chances.
Junior
Kaitlyn Dougherty was only reached for one earned run in a solid 5 1/3 inning start. She struck out two and walked two and senior
Logan Rohrbach recorded the final five outs in perfect form to close out the game.
Next up on the calendar, the Tritons will host Dominican (N.Y.) University on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at the Turley Athletic Complex scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. in game one.
