Women’s Sailing Qualifies For ACC Championships; Coed Wins South Points #4

GAINESVILLE/MIAMI, Fla.
– The Eckerd College coed and women's sailing programs put together a pair of strong weekend performances in Gainesville and Miami, respectively, at South Points #4, the SAISA Singlehanded Championships and SAISA Fall Dinghy Championships.

The Tritons claimed top team honors in the South Points #4 field via tiebreaker criteria against the University of South Florida.

EC's “A” Division finished with seven points and the “B” Division recorded 16 as it sailed to a combined low 23-point total at Lake Wauberg on the campus of the University of Florida.

Junior Erik Brydges sailed with freshman Sam Scales while sophomore Seth Barrows was paired with sophomore Amanda Smith in Gainesville on Saturday.

“We sailed pretty well and finally won one of the South Points events,” EC Head Coach Kevin Reali said. “After coming close in our other attempts this season, it was great to come away with a win.”

The Tritons spent Saturday in Miami sailing on winds that peaked around eight knots at the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championships.

The women's program then qualified for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships that will take place on Nov. 10-11 following their efforts on Sunday at the SAISA Fall Dinghy Championships.

Eckerd narrowly edged the University of South Florida for a spot, finishing third out of four at Biscayne Bay. The College of Charleston (S.C.) and University of Miami also qualified for the ACC Championships.

Senior Kaye Siemers, junior Rachel Cruz, senior Amy Baxter and sophomore Ann Williamson, all traveled and competed.

“The ACC Championship is the most competitive regatta in the fall for the women,” Reali said. “Qualifying for the ACC's is very important. The fact that only four teams were at the event (Fall Districts) doesn't give it justice. All the teams are talented to compete and we're happy for the result.”

A strong finish by the Tritons at the ACC Championships would play into a potential national ranking to begin the spring season.

The Eckerd women's performance also helped its cause for a favorable schedule in the spring based on the finish in their district.

The Tritons will be competing at the South Points #5 event in Miami and the Moody Trophy, held in Kingston, R.I., for the upcoming weekend.
