Baseball Falls in Rain-Shortened Home Opener

Eckerd-Warner (Fla.) Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Warner University's Brett Stanton tossed six solid innings to help the Royals take a 3-2 win over the Eckerd College baseball team on Saturday in a rain-shortened contest at the Turley Athletic Complex.

Stanton was credited with a complete-game win, as the contest was called after six innings due to a steady rain that made the field unplayable. The right-hander gave up just three hits and worked around four walks.

Bryant Gibson had an RBI single for Eckerd (1-1), and Joe McLemore added an RBI sacrifice fly.

Warner (2-1) scored two runs without a hit in the second inning off Eckerd right-hander Anthony Katchuk (0-1). Katchuk was hampered by three consecutive walks and a wild pitch but managed to escape a potentially big inning without further damage.

The Royals added another run in the third on a Justin Griffin RBI single. Eckerd cut the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The second game was postponed to noon on April 19 at Warner. The regularly scheduled game will immediately follow.
