ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Thomas grabbed two tight matches in doubles play en route to a 6-1 win over the Eckerd College women's tennis team on Saturday at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Amanda Teets grabbed the Tritons' point in No. 3 singles, capturing a 6-1, 6-3 victory over St. Thomas' Ydsia Quintero. But Eckerd, playing its season opener, dropped its remaining three singles matches after the Bobcats claimed all three doubles wins.
The doubles points nearly went Eckerd's way, though. Both the No. 1 and 2 doubles ended in a tiebreaker, with St. Thomas' Gabriella Bongiovanni and Emilia Vuorela defeating Teets and Emmy Laing 7-1 in the No. 1 doubles tiebreaker.
The Bobcat tandem of Quintero and Manuela Gil topped Stephanie Jenks and Telara Buelow 7-3 in the No. 2 tiebreaker.
“I'm very proud of the girls and how they competed,” said Eckerd head coach Erin Koenig. “No. 1 and 2 doubles were so close. We played well in singles, but we need to work on being more consistent and working the points.”
Eckerd will play host to Saint Leo at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
