CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Eckerd College softball team concluded their final day at the Triton Spring Invitational losing to Flagler College to 1-7 and suffering a major loss against St. Leo University in an 11-inning thriller 5-4. The Tritons' over all record is now 3-9.
The Tritons jumped out to a lead against Flagler College in the first game. In the top of the third inning, Meagan Camp made her way on base with a throwing error by the Flagler short stop, which allowed Camp to advance to second. With two down, Kirsten Cox blasted a double over the left fielder's head to bring home the run and put the Tritons up, 1-0.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Flagler capitalized on errors made by the Tritons to score four runs, one of which was earned. The Saints continued to take advantage of errors that were made by the Tritons in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three more to make the score 1-7. Eckerd made attempts to get on base in the top of the seventh, but the Saints defense and pitching were able to shut down the Tritons to end the game.
Kristin Schurr led the way at the plate for Eckerd, going 2-for-3. Mackenzie Dawson suffered the loss for the Tritons, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs and seven hits.
The final game of the day for the Tritons, and also for the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational, was against conference foe St. Leo University in a non Sunshine State Conference game. It was a pitcher's duel, as Alex Koronkiewicz and St. Leo pitcher Ashley Whidden pitched great games. The game remained scoreless up until the top of the sixth, when Kirsten Cox drove home Amelia Czelatka in a base hit up the middle. The Lions answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ana Castillo drilled a double down the left field line to bring home Sarah Boyd to tie the game up 1-1 with two outs. Koronkiewicz was able to strike out Dianne Gonzalez to bring the game into extra innings.
The score went back and forth as the game went into extra innings. As the Tritons continued to add to their score, the Lions did the same. In the bottom of the 11th inning, St. Leo took advantage on a throwing error, which brought home a run to tie the game, 4-4. With bases loaded and one out, Elysha Agen was able to score for the Lions on a passed ball, to make the ending score 4-5 and a St. Leo win.
Koronkiewicz pitched a great game against the Lions, despite suffering the extra inning loss. She allowed six hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck out 10 batters. Her record is now 2-4. Dawson, Cox, Alex Sasso, Schurr, and Czelatka all had one hit each for the Tritons.
Eckerd will be back in action February 23rd as they play host to NAIA Ave Maria University in double-header action at the Turley Athletic Complex. First game will be played at 6:00 pm.
