AVE MARIA, Fla. – Senior
Ashley Lutz scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Eckerd College women's basketball team to a 58-40 victory over Ave Maria on Tuesday night.
The Tritons (4-1) found their inside game after a slow start to the season, scoring a season-high 30 points in the paint on the Gyrenes.
“We've really been focusing on posting the ball and getting our inside game back,” head coach
Paul Honsinger said. “Once we got the ball inside, good things happened. We've had an outside approach for the last three games, so it was good to see some inside scoring.”
After trailing 4-0 in the opening minutes of the first half, the Tritons went on a 13-0 run and never gave up the lead the rest of the game. Eckerd led 29-14 at the half, holding the Gyrenes to 17 percent shooting from the floor.
“In past games we've been on point defensively and we started that way tonight,” Honsinger said. “I think we are really defending well. We are pressuring the ball well and managed tonight to turn some of our defense into offense.”
Senior forward
Tijana Brdar scored nine points and added five rebounds.
Emily Huber led Ave Maria (4-4) with 13 points.
Eckerd out-rebounded Ave Maria 33-28 (25-18 defensive) and shot 47 percent overall. The Tritons also had 15 points off of 15 turnovers.
The Tritons will head to Pensacola, Fla. for the Highpointe Hotel Corporation Classic this weekend. They will face the host school West Florida on Friday at 8 p.m. Results will be posted on eckerdtritons.com.
