Michaela Cloonan named assistant women's basketball coach

ST. PETERSBURG – Head women's basketball coach Paul Honsinger has announced the hiring of Michaela Cloonan as the program's assistant coach.

"I'm super excited to have Michaela on staff," said Honsinger. "Her DII experience and familiarity with our league should allow for a seamless transition. She is ambitious, hard working and eager to get started. I'm looking forward to working with her."

Cloonan joins the Tritons after serving as a graduate assistant with NCAA Division II McKendree last season. She helped lead the Bearcats to an 18-9 overall record and a 15-5 finish in conference play, also playing part in the team's conference-leading scoring offense. McKendree boasted two All-Conference players last season and the top offensive rebounding squad in the GLVC. In addition to coaching and player development, Cloonan designed and implemented weekly skill workouts and postseason training programs, while also managing team operations, social media, and academic support.

Cloonan played college basketball at Ursuline College in Ohio, where she was a three-time All-Conference selection and 1,000-point scorer. She was named the athletic department's player of the year in 2022 and started all four years with the program. She went on to play an additional season with Nova Southeastern in 2024-25, helping lead the Sharks to a Sweet 16 appearance.

"I am super excited to join the Eckerd women's basketball program and grateful for the opportunity to work with Coach Honsinger," said Cloonan. "Eckerd has built a program that consistently competes and wins, and I am excited to be a part of that. I am looking forward to building relationships with our players, helping them develop on and off the court, and doing whatever I can to contribute to the continued success of the program."
