ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Kati Rausberg scored nine points on three 3-pointers to lead the Eckerd College women's basketball team to a 56-41 win over visiting Benedict College on Saturday afternoon.
The Tritons (2-0) made seven treys overall and held Benedict (0-1) to just 21 percent shooting -- including 16 percent in the first half.
Three Tritons scored eight points apiece, including Tijana Brdar, Ashley Lutz and Taylor Young. Young also added a team-best eight rebounds.
Eckerd used a 15-2 run during a 12-minute stretch of the first half to grab a double-digit lead. The Tritons held a 25-13 lead at halftime and led by double figures during the entire second half.
The Tritons shot 44 percent in the second half.
More importantly to Eckerd head coach Paul Honsinger was the rebounding battle, which Eckerd won 47-39.
“The game plan was to rebound, and I was happy with the way we limited their second chances – particularly in the first half,” Honsinger said. “We had to be fundamentally sound, and I thought – for the most part – we did a good job of boxing out.”
Benedict was just 7-for-34 from 3-point range (20 percent) and had three scorers tally eight points.
Eckerd also had a few struggles offensively, shooting 37 percent overall while committing 21 turnovers.
“Offensively we're just a little uncertain and anxious out there,” Honsinger said. “But what makes me happy is we are finding other ways to win, and that was with rebounding and defense today.”
The Tritons will host the 2010 Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic beginning on Friday. The Tritons will face Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 3 p.m.
