ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Senior guard
John Harper led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field to help push the Eckerd Tritons (2-0) past the Florida Memorial Lions (2-5), 83-55, on Tuesday evening at the McArthur Center.
In the first half, a layup by
Lewis Lampley with 5:52 to go gave the Tritons their largest lead of the half at 29-21. The Lions, however, would finish the half by out-scoring Eckerd 15-9, including a layup by Felix Borger with three seconds left, closing the gap to 38-36 at the half.
In the second half, however, the Tritons would start the half on a 28-6 run, sparked, and capped, by a pair of Harper jumpers, to open the game up at 56-39 with 11:58 to go. Eckerd would continue its roll for the remainder of the half, out-scoring the Lions 27-16 the rest of the way in a run that included a conventional three-point play converted by Harper and a fastbreak dunk by
Dale Carn set-up by a steal by
Wayne Sears.
For the game, Eckerd out-shot the Lions 54.9 percent to 32.3 percent from the field. The Tritons also out-rebound FMU 40-33. Eckerd also got 38 points from its bench while the Lions scored just 23 off the pine.
Lance Kearse added eight points to the Tritons' total while EC also had six other players score seven points. Lampley and
Adio Faucher grabbed seven boards each while Lampley and
Chris Gray dished out five assists each.
Tarvis Williams led the Lions with nine points off the bench.
Eckerd will return to action on Friday, November 27 as it hosts Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 7:30pm on day one of the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic at the McArthur Center.
