Ataseven Takes Home NGTA Yonex Open Series Title

SARASOTA, Fla. - Freshman, Batu Ataseven took home the individual singles title as four Tritons opened the fall-season competing in the Yonex Open Series at the Longwood Athletic Club over the weekend.

Ataseven was the No. 1 seed going into the tournament, earning himself a first-round bye. He won his opening match against C.Tavernier. He then had two more great wins against F. Felsmann and C. Strother to advance to the final before beating A. Kelley to secure the individual singles title. "Batu handled the tournament pressure very well and was able to play his game style all weekend," said head tennis coach Ben Maxwell '11.  "His aggressive baseline play rewarded him with great opportunities to win points. When pushed, he stayed composed and continued to play well. I'm looking forward to watching him continue to improve and compete."

Jon William Karlstad was the No. 2 seed going into the tournament, earning himself a first-round bye. Karlstad won his first two rounds and lost a hard-fought battle in the semifinals against A. Kelley (4-6, 6-3, 13-11).

Phil Grueninger and Christian Kearns were also back in action as they both picked up a match win. Grueninger fell in his second match after defeating M. Murphy. Kearns fell in the quarterfinals to A. Kelley.
