ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd beach volleyball team won both its matches on Thursday to begin the Triton Invite, defeating the Emmanuel (Ga.) Lions by a score of 4-1 before knocking off the Barry Buccaneers for the second time this season by the same score.
Against Emmanuel, three of Eckerd's four wins came in straight sets.
Teagan VanderMey and
Ella Kloepper earned a 21-16, 21-11 victory at the No. 2 spot, while
Addie White and
Marti Boser secured a 21-15, 22-20 win at No. 4. The duo of
Jessi Meghreblian and
Natalie Harvey at No. 5 made quick of their opponents with a 21-8, 21-10 final score, while
Brooke Hand and
Anna Jupin held on for a three-set win at the top spot. The Lions' lone victory came at No. 3.
In match two against Barry, the top two spots were victorious on their court, beginning with VanderMey and Kloepper notching a 21-16, 21-13 decision before Hand and Jupin collected a 21-16, 21-16 win to follow. White and Boser went three sets at No. 4, but came away with a 21-17, 14-21, 15-10 final score, and
Maddie Prois and
Emma Samuelson quickly won by retirement at No. 3 after winning the opening set 21-4. Barry's lone victory came at No. 5.
Eckerd improves to 5-7 with the wins and will take on Erskine tomorrow afternoon.
