ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd College President Dr. James Annarelli has appointed Dr. James Janack as the Tritons Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR).
Dr. Janack has been a Professor of Communication at Eckerd since 2005. He is also the Director of the Oral Communication Program and the Director of the Rahall Communication Resource Center. He was the Tritons' Professor of the Year in 2023, presented at the annual ECSPYs.
"We're excited to have Dr. Janack step into the role of Faculty Athletic Representative. He's been a true advocate for our student-athletes—not just showing up in the stands, but consistently supporting their academic success behind the scenes," said Director of Athletics Tom Ryan '87. "His genuine passion for both academics and athletics makes him a perfect fit. Over the past few months, Dr. Janack and Dr. Brunello have had several conversations to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition."
Dr. Janack has served on many committees and leadership roles over his 20 years at Eckerd including; Interim Chair of the Creative Arts Collegium, Educational Assessment Committee, Academic Honor Council, Faculty Coordinating Committee, Discipline Coordinator for Communication, Workload Task Force, President and Vice President of Zeta Chapter of ΦΒΚ, Strategic Planning Steering Committee, Academic Standards Committee, General Education Assessment Group, Oral Communication Program Assessment Committee, Educational Policy and Program Committee, Basic Course Coordinator.
Prior to Eckerd, he was a visiting assistant professor of communication at Syracuse University from 2001 to 2005, an assistant professor of communication at Framingham State College from 1999 to 2001, and a teacher of English at Linguarama Spracheninstitut in Germany from 1991 to 1993.
A Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) at an NCAA member institution is a faculty member designated to act as a liaison between the university and its athletics department, ensuring a balance between academic and athletic pursuits. The FAR also represents the institution in conference and NCAA affairs.
