GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team battled through the second day of the AVCA Small College Championships, falling 3-0 to the University of Tampa and facing a narrow 3-2 defeat against Saint Leo University on Friday.
Eckerd (7-23) opened up the day with a 3-0 loss to Tampa (17-8).
Teagan VanderMey and Ella Kloepper fell to Spartans sisters Nevaeh and Hailey Wolfe 21-13, 21-14. In the No. 3 pairing, Addie White and Madison Hardbarger dropped their first set 21-12 and the second set 21-13. Jessi Meghreblian and Marti Lu Boser also fell in straight sets, 21-10 and 21-11.
The Tritons' second and final match of the day resulted in a tight 3-2 loss to Saint Leo (15-12).
VanderMey and Kloepper went head-to-head with Lion's Tajma Muharemovic and Oliwia Durka in the No. 2 slot, claiming a straight-set victory. The Tritons duo took control early with a 21-14 win in the first set and held off a late push to seal the match 21-19 in the second.
White and Hardbarger delivered a commanding performance, cruising to a straight-set victory with scores of 21-14 and 21-10.
Meghreblian and Lu Boser came up just short in a tightly contested match, dropping the first set 21-18 and narrowly missing a comeback in the second, falling 21-19.
Brooke Hand and Anna Jupin fell 21-18 in their first set, and despite their best efforts, couldn't make a comeback and ultimately lost the second set 21-14. Emma Samuelson and Mariana Olivares-Cely were defeated in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-13.
Eckerd returns to the court tomorrow at 9:50 AM to face Wayne State College (14-5) in the Silver Bracket. The winner of the match will play Vanguard at 12:10 PM.
