LAKELAND, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team split two contests in a tri-match at Florida Southern at the Judy and Joe P. Ruthven Beach Volleyball Courts on Wednesday afternoon. The Tritons avenged a 5-0 loss to Saint Leo to start the day with a 5-0 sweep over Florida Southern in their second match.
Eckerd (2-1) battled in the opening match with the Lions (7-4), taking three positions to three sets, but ultimately EC dropped each position.
Kitana Lim and Agata Sklepik battled in three sets in the No. 1 slot but ultimately fell. In the No. 3 pairing, Joelle Coulter and Addie White battled tightly in each set, 24-22; 21-16; 15-10, ultimately dropping the slot. Sophie Romigh and Jessi Megrheblian fought in the No. 5 slot, taking the second and third sets to extra points (21-12; 26-24;17-15).
The Tritons topped Florida Southern (1-5) in the finale taking each draw with a straight sets win over the Mocs.
After a narrow first set of 21-19, the No. 1 tandem of Dana Dull and Anna Jupin defeated Olivia D'Agostino and Emma Shaddix with a second set win of 21-12.
Agata Sklepik and Kitana Lim cruised in the No. 2 draw, defeating Sarah Crocker and Ashil Mckenny 21-12, 21-10.
Addie White and Joelle Coulter dominated in the first set, holding off Destiny Ramsey and Sophia Rakauskas to single digits in the first set 21-8 and taking set two 21-18 in the No. 3 slot.
The No. 4 draw was close, as Teagan VanderMey and Grace Badlam edged Hayley St. Martin and Christina Ramazio 21-19, 21-17.
Sophia Romigh and Madison Hardbarger finished the sweep in the No. 5 spot, downing Chloe Maxwell and Madeline Sanders 21-13, 21-16.
Jessi Megrheblian and Nicki Bechtold also collected an extra victory in the exhibition slot with a straight sets victory.
The Tritons (2-1) host their annual Battle on the Bay tournament this weekend at the North Shore Courts in St. Petersburg. Friday, they face off against Saint Leo at 1:00 PM and Palm Beach Atlantic at 4:00 PM.
