TAVARES, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team wrapped up its season on the final day of the AVCA Small College Beach Championships on Saturday, dropping a pair of contests to Catawba (NC), 3-2, and Wayne State (Neb.), 4-1, at Hickory Point Beach.
Eckerd (1-19) narrowly missed coming away with the victory over Catawba (4-21-1) in the opener after collecting wins in the No. 1 and 2 draws.
The No. 1 duo of Anna Jungjohann and Dana Dull (21-18, 21-11) put EC on the board. Good fortune continued for Eckerd, as Joelle Coulter and Nicole Perekhodko made easy work of the No. 2 slot with a 21-13 and 21-15 victory.
The No. 3 pairing of Sophia Romigh and Nicki Bechtold dropped the first set 21-15 and battled back-and-forth in the second set before ultimately losing the nail-biter, 22-20. The short-handed Tritons dropped the match after forfeiting the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
In the second match versus Wayne State (14-6), the Tritons nearly came away with a victory again after taking the No. 3 draw, but were edged in three sets in the top two pairings. Romigh and Bechtold earned the win in the No. 3 pairing, 21-15 and 21-14, giving each Triton draw a victory on the day.
Jungjohann and Dull almost pulled off their second win out of the No. 1 draw, taking it to a three-set tiebreaker before ultimately losing, 21-18, 12-21, 15-12. Coulter and Perekhodko also went to a three-set tiebreaker after falling in the first set 21-17, bouncing back for a 21-17 second-set win, before losing the third set 15-9. EC dropped the No. 4 and 5 slots.
