VENUE UPDATE: ECSPYs Will Now Take Place at the McArthur Center
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The 2022 ECSPYs (Eckerd College Sports Performance Yearly's) is set for Monday, May 2, at 7:00 PM.
The annual award show celebrates each of our teams and another year in Eckerd Athletics. For the first time, members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host the show at the McArthur Center.
Triton fans and family can also watch the ECSPYs in our game portal at SunshineStateConference.tv/Eckerd.
In addition to celebrating our team, Eckerd will induct the 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame Class of Lara Dallman-Weiss, Joe Lefebvre, and Rhonda (Harris) Mathews.
Dallman-Weiss was a skipper and crew on both the coed and women's sailing team in her time as a Triton, graduating in 2011. She earned skipper and crew of the year awards during her time, including being named both the coed and women's skipper of the year in 2011. She led the Tritons to the ICSA Nationals three consecutive years, competing in both the coed and women's nationals in 2009 and 2011. After Eckerd, Dallman-Weiss continued her sailing prowess, competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the United States in the women's 470 event. Dallman-Weiss and her skipper, Nicki Barnes, finished 12th overall. She is currently campaigning for the 2024 Olympics in the coed 470 class.
Lefebvre was a starting centerfielder and pitcher of the 1977 baseball team, the Division II National Runner-up, garnering ABCA First Team All-American honors that season. He also led the team to an NCAA Tournament Appearance in 1976. Lefebvre played from 1976-77 and ranks in the top-10 in four categories in program history. He holds the program record for career triples with 17 while ranking second in ERA (2.15), third in slugging percentage (.670), and sixth in batting average (.375). He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the third round of the 1977 free-agent draft. He made his MLB debut in 1980 with the Yankees. Over his six-year career, he produced a .258 batting average while hitting 31 home runs and driving in 130 runs. During his time with the Yankees, he helped lead them to the AL East title. With the Phillies, he guided the team to the National League Title and World Series appearances in 1983.
Mathews was a three-sport athlete during her time at EC. She played women's basketball and volleyball from 1983-87 and slow-pitch softball in 1984, garnering Sunshine State Conference accolades in both basketball and volleyball. In volleyball, she was named to the All-SSC First Team in 1985 and 1986. In basketball, she was a three-time all-conference selection, receiving second-team honors in 1984-85, honorable mention in 1985-86, and finally first-team recognition her senior year in 1986-87. Over her four years, Mathews scored 929 points while grabbing 528 rebounds. She ranks in the top-10 in three categories in program history, fourth in points per game (15.7), sixth in field goal percentage (.502), sixth in blocks (99). After her time at Eckerd, she played one season of professional basketball in France and played handball at the Olympic Festival in 1987.
Below is a list of awards and honors that will be recognized during the ECSPYs. The show also includes an all sports highlight video, and a mic'd up segment of practices for each team.
Friends of Athletics: Each year, the entire Athletics Staff selects an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary service and commitment to the department and to our student-athletes.
Professor of the Year: The athletes are asked to nominate those professors who went above and beyond in their mentoring endeavors. Many candidates were put forward, further demonstrating how influential Eckerd's professors are in the lives of our students.
MVP (one per team): The awards celebrate the student-athletes who have given the most valuable performance in athletic competition.
Triton Award (one per team): The award is given to student-athletes who reach the highest levels of athletic achievement, academic excellence, and leadership. We honor the students who have invested so much of themselves in order to achieve excellence in the classroom and compete at a very high level.
Senior Career Achievements: We recognize our senior athletes who have broken a record, or reached a milestone (e.g., 1,000 career points) during their career.
Holt Weeks Award: In honor of William Holt Weeks, the award is given to a men's tennis player who best represents the character and spirit of Holt Weeks -Leader, Scholar, Athlete, Volunteer
Senior Scholar-Athlete Award: The award is presented to one male and female senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.
William J. Mathews Academic Excellence Award: The award is presented to the team with the highest cumulative GPA over the last year (spring 2021, fall 2021, winter 2022).
Athlete of the Year: The award is presented to the top male and female athletes for their athletic performances over the year.
James R. Harley Award: The award is presented to the male and female senior student-athletes who demonstrate leadership and excellence in the classroom, on the field of competition, and in their community. This is the highest award an Eckerd student-athlete can receive, and it is given in honor of Jim Harley, who served the college as director of athletics for nearly 40 years.
Athletic Directors Honor Roll: The award honors student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall term.
