Eckerd's first program SSC title came in 1978 when baseball won the regular-season championship. First-year head coach, John Mayotte, led the Tritons to a 33-9 season and 13-2 mark in SSC play.
Eckerd finished the season ranked third nationally, just a year after finishing as the National Runner-up in 1977.
As a team, EC hit .315 with 33 homeruns. Steve Balboni led the team with a .403 batting average and 14 homeruns. His .526 on-base percentage still holds a single-season record. Randy Kwist led the team with 55 RBIs while hitting .353.
As a team, the pitching staff produced a 2.83 ERA with 235 strikeouts. Steve Almonte led the team with a 1.98 ERA and a 7-0 record, and Kerry Freedman also recorded seven wins with a 2.41 ERA.
The Tritons also made their sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
