ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd beach volleyball team won a tight opening contests on the second day of the Battle on the Bay as they topped Tennessee- Martin, 3-2, before breezing past Jacksonville, 4-1, on Saturday.
Eckerd (3-1) picked up its first point over Tennessee Martin (4-5) in the No. 4 draw as
Ivey Andrews and
Payton Meader took the first set easily at 21-13. The duo narrowly fell in the second set 26-24 but took the third 15-12.
Paula Hoffmann and
Anna Jungjohann earned the next point as they breezed in the No. 1 slot, 21-14 and 22-20.
Agata Sklepik and
Sam Crankshaw in the No. 2 spot battled back from an opening set loss, 21-15, to take the second and third by scores of 21-15 and 15-12 to give Eckerd the win.
The Tritons went ahead early in their second match, taking victories in the No. 4 and 5 slots over Jacksonville (0-4). Andrews and Meader in the No. 4 won in straight sets, 21-18 and 21-12, as well as
Fernanda Reis and Nicole Bechtold, 21-17 and 21-11, in the No. 5 draw.
Eckerd picked up their third victory in the No. 1 slot, as Hoffman and Jungjohann battled through a tight three-sets, 21-17, 19-21, 15-7. The Dolphins took the No. 3 position beofre Eckerd's No. 2 pairing of Sklepik and Crankshaw took a straight-sets victory.
The Tritons return to action on Wednesday at the Eckerd beach courts as they host Tusculum (Tenn.) for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 PM.
