ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd beach volleyball team opened up the season at the fourth annual Battle on the Bay at the North Shore Courts with a tight 3-2 win over Florida Southern before falling to Tampa 5-0 in the second game on Friday.
The tandem of
Paula Hoffmann and
Anna Jungjohann in the No. 1 draw breezed in their match, 21-13 and 21-17.
Ivey Andrews and
Payton Meader in the No. 4 slot took a 21-17 win in the first set but dropped the second by the same score. The pair then rallied to take the third 15-10.
Fernanda Reis and Nicole Bechtold in the No. 5 slot took a tight first set 21-19 before taking the second 21-15.
Eckerd (1-1) nearly picked up a fourth win over Florida Southern (3-2) as
Agata Sklepik and
Sam Crankshaw narrowly lost, 23-25,21-13, 15-13, in the No. 2 spot.
Tampa (7-3) topped the Tritons in the second game taking all five matches.
After dropping the first set 21-12, Hoffmann and Junjohann battled in extra points but fell 25-23. Reis and Bechtold also nearly collected a victory in the No. 5 draw as Reis and Bechtold posted a 22-24 first set victory but dropped the second 21-12 and were outlasted 19-17 in the deciding third set.
Eckerd is back in action at the Battle on the Bay as they play Tennessee-Martin at 12:00 PM and Jacksonville at 4:00 PM.
