Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. - Webber International scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally for an 8-7 win over the Eckerd baseball team on Wednesday night.
The Tritons (13-19) broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by
Tom Buonopane and a two-run single by
Chase Achuff to take a 7-4 lead into the home half of the inning.
However, the Warriors - ranked No. 15 in the NAIA - pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame setting the stage to complete the comeback in the ninth.
After retiring the side in the top of the final inning, Webber began the game-winning rally with one out by putting runners on the corners. Â
Jack Mahan struck out the next batter but issued a wild pitch that allowed one run to score, then loaded the bases on a pair of walks.
Cristian Rivera cleared two of those bags with a double to the left field wall, bringing in the tying and winning runs.
It was the first time that the Warriors (29-8) led in the game.
Eckerd scored twice in the first inning on a wild pitch and a throwing error on a dropped third strike, then added another run in the second on a solo home run by
Justin Glover (3).
WIU tied the game in the third before a
Sam Cochrane single drove in
Daniel Autiello in the fifth as EC retook the lead. Â The Warriors again knotted the score in the sixth inning, and the game remained tied until the Tritons plated three in the top of the eighth.
Nick Conti led Eckerd at the plate with two hits, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 32 games. Â Cochrane, Glover, Buonopane, Achuff and
Mitch Calandra also recorded hits for EC.
Mahan (2-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in 1-2/3 innings of work. Â Nine Triton pitchers saw action tonight with
Nick Alonzo,
Justin Carrillo and
Chris Paiva all throwing one scoreless inning.
Eckerd returns to the field on Friday, hosting Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in a three-game series at the Turley Athletic Complex. Â Friday's opener begins at 6:00 PM.
