Tritons Swept by No. 5 Valdosta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 5 Valdosta State hit five home runs, the last of which was a walk-off grand slam to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Eckerd softball team on Tuesday, 10-0 and 7-3.

After losing the first game via the run rule, the Tritons (13-24) were on the verge of earning a split carrying a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning of the finale.

The Blazers, however, rallied with one out to tie the game on a two-run single by Jessica Mohl before Hayley Cruthers capped the day with a grand slam to right center for a walk-off win.

Trailing 1-0 going into the sixth, the Tritons took the lead after a pair of VSU errors allowed two runs to score.  Chelsea Armstrong added to the lead in the seventh with an RBI single to bring in Rachael Luckett, who opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a bunt by Kaylin Kramer.

After walking the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the inning, Grace Willeck (2-6) coaxed a popup for the first out but was unable to record another as VSU rallied for the win.

Willeck was outstanding through six innings, limiting Valdosta State to two hits and one run while striking out seven.

Luckett went 2-for-4 while Avery Wakefield was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Blazers (27-8) blasted four solo home runs along with a bases-loaded double on the way to a run-rule victory.

VSU scored five times in the second and four in the third to open a sizable lead.  Eckerd, meanwhile, only managed one hit off Blazer starter Avery Lamb, a single by Luckett in the fourth.

Janna Gaburo (3-4) took the loss in game one, allowing eight runs - four earned - in 2-2/3 innings.

The Tritons return to the field this weekend hosting Lynn University in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 7:00 PM.
