SOFTBALL GAMEDAY: Tritons Travel to Face No. 5 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Eckerd softball team travels to No. 5 Valdosta State to take on the Blazers for a doubleheader today at 4:00.

WEEKEND RECAP
- The Tritons lost three games to Nova Southeastern this weekend by scores of 7-1, 3-2, and 2-1 (8). In both games Saturday, Eckerd lost on walk-off hits by the Sharks. In the first game, Eckerd scored early and took a 2-0 lead into the final inning. Kaleigh Floyd was able to score in the third inning off an errant throw by Nova's pitcher. In the sixth inning, the Tritons capitalized on another Shark error to take a 2-0 lead. The Sharks, however, produced the tying and winning runs with one out in the seventh inning.
- The finale was a close contest, as Eckerd again scored early. In the first inning, Chelsea Armstrong drove a shot to left center bringing in Rachael Luckett to take a 1-0 lead. Nova evened the score in the bottom of the inning. The two teams were unable to score in regulation forcing the game into extra innings. Nova delivered another walk-off single to win the game.

JUNIOR LEADERS
- A trio of juniors - Luckett (.295), Armstrong (.268), and Crystal Garcia (.292) - lead the offensive production for the Tritons.
- Luckett has smacked seven doubles, one triple, and one home run. The first baseman has driven in 14 runs while scoring 23.
- Armstrong leads the team in RBIs with 18. The third baseman smacked her first home run of the season two weeks ago against Rollins on her way to an impressive four-RBI game.
- Garcia has dropped down 35 hits with two doubles and one triple. The shortstop has swiped 17 bags on the season, fifth in the conference.

ON THE RUBBER
- Nikole Van Gennep (8-14) has been effective in the circle for the Tritons. The sophomore has done most of the work this season, leading the team with a 2.08 ERA over 145 innings. She has fanned 69 while keeping her hitters to a .261 batting average.
- Janna Gaburo (3-3) and Grace Willeck (2-5) have split time behind Van Gennep. Gaburo has a 4.06 ERA over 41.1 innings. Willeck maintains a 4.25 ERA over 52.2 with 41 punchouts.

ABOUT THE BLAZERS
- Valdosta State comes into the doubleheader with only eight losses, losing twice over the weekend to Lee in a conference series.
- Two-thirds of the Blazers starting lineup is hitting over .300 while Jessica Mohl (.449), Hayley Cruthers (.436), and Chelsea Canara (.420) are hitting over .400. The team has tons of power leading to a .522 slugging percentage. Canara sets the pace with 12 doubles and nine home runs. Mohl leads the team on the bases with 16 steals.
- Avery Lamb (4.44) and Kathryn Carter (5.00) have split time in the circle pitching 79 and 72 innings respectively. Each has 10 wins as Lamb leads the team with 37 strikeouts.
