Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite a hard fought battle, the women's soccer team struggled to capitalize on its chances, falling to No. 15 Embry-Riddle University in a non-conference matchup Saturday night.
"We played really hard," EC head coach Danielle Fotopoulos said. "Embry-Riddle connected really well and finished their chances. It was a good match."
Eckerd (5-5) dominated the beginning of the first half, firing off five shots and earning three corners in the beginning 22 minutes. Momentum, however, soon shifted in favor of the Eagles.
In the 23rd minute, forward Maria Schmiedhofer took the Eagles' first shot of the game, but it was blocked. Unluckily for the Tritons, Embry-Riddle's Isabelle Haaranen was there for the rebound, putting it in the back of the net and giving the Eagles a one-goal lead.Â
Nine minutes into the second half, Schmiedhofer gave Embry-Riddle an insurance goal after a give-and-go inside Eckerd's 18-yard box. The Eagles (5-1-1) added another goal in the 58th minute, stretching their lead to 3-0.Â
Despite the three-goal loss, Eckerd earned seven corner kicks and was only outshot by three but still struggled to find the back of the net.Â
"We need to capitalize on our chances," Fotopoulos said.Â
Goalkeeper Casey Winn added three more saves tonight to her season total of 50. Junior Sydney Tiiman finished the night with three shots and the remaining nine shots for Eckerd spread between nine players.
The Tritons return to Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a home match against No. 6 Rollins College at 7:00 PM.
