ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Coming off a pair of losses in as many days, the Eckerd men's tennis team returned to winning form with a sweep over the visiting West Chester (Pa.) Golden Rams.
Doubles competition was a battle for the Tritons (4-2), but they managed to pull out all three points. At second doubles,
James McManus and
Frazier Springfield defeated the pairing of Lars Kristiansen and Troy Donato, 8-4, while
Alasdair Knox and
Eddie Lewis did the same to Tony Deimler and Ryan Keffer at third doubles. Number one doubles was a different story as
Yosua Husodo and
Victor Appelqvist fought their way to a 9-8 (7-5) tiebreak victory.
EC quickly put the Golden Rams (1-4) away in singles competition by taking the top three positions in straight sets. The clinched victory shortened the remaining three spots to eight-game pro sets, but that did not mean it was the end of the excitement.
Robert Vazquez fell behind 3-6 in his No. 6 singles match against Keanu Travlino, but a surge led him to capture the next five games and the match.
Head coach
Ben Maxwell credits his men's victory with their teamwork.
"All of the guys got the job done, and it's exciting to see them work together all season," he said.
The Tritons welcome a day's break tomorrow after three straight match dates, but they return to action on Wednesday. Quincy (Ill.) University will challenge EC at the Bullard Courts with the match set to begin at 3:00 PM.
