ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team hosted the ITA No. 7 Saint Leo Lions in the first Sunshine State Conference matchup of the season.
The Lions (5-1, 1-0 SSC) were too much for EC (3-2, 0-1 SSC) as SLU went on for a 9-0 sweep at the Fred Bullard Courts.
Despite the loss, head coach
Ben Maxwell was pleased with his team's effort against one of the top teams in the country.
"Saint Leo played tough, but our guys fought as hard as they could," he said. "I'm proud of their effort."
The duo of
James McManus and
Frazier Springfield hung tough in their No. 2 doubles matchup before falling,8-4. McManus carried that play over into singles, giving Oskar Nurmio a difficult test in the first set (6-4).
The Tritons have a short turnaround as they host the Golden Rams from West Chester University of Pennsylvania on Monday. The match is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
