ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's basketball team heads to the postseason looking to make a run and earn a repeat trip to the NCAA National Tournament. It begins tonight in the quarterfinals as the Tritons visit second-seeded Florida Tech at 7:00 PM.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS: Florida Tech earned the No. 2 seed in the SSC tournament after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches poll. The Panthers went 12-4 in conference play with two losses coming to top-seeded Nova Southeastern. Shequana Harris leads the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game. FIT is also one of the SSC's stingiest defenses, allowing just 59.5 points per game and holding opponents to 37.6 percent shooting.
REGULAR SEASON SERIES: The Panthers won both games over Eckerd in the regular season, 69-49 in St. Petersburg on December 2 and 62-55 in Melbourne on January 30. Harris scored 22 points in the first meeting but EC did a much better job the second time around, holding her to eight points. Eckerd struggled with turnovers both times with 17 in the first meeting and 22 in the second.
KEY MATCHUP: Two things plagued the Tritons in their games with Florida Tech this year - turnovers and rebounding. In the December game, FIT held a plus-12 rebounding edge and had 15 offensive rebounds. In the January contest, Eckerd turned the ball over 22 times and allowed 17 second-chance points. If the Tritons can limit turnovers and keep the Panthers off the offensive glass, they'll stand a good chance to pull the upset.
NO TIME TO STOP: Senior guard
Margaret Sundberg rarely comes off the floor, averaging 36.6 minutes per game - tops in the conference and 18th nationally. Sundberg leads the Tritons in scoring (11.5 points per game) and assists (3.0 assists per game) while shooting 43.5 percent from 3-point range.
BOARD WORK: Sophomore
Kacie Juday is one of the top rebounders in conference, ranking third in the SSC with 7.0 rebounds per game. She nearly posted two double-doubles last week, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on Wednesday against Florida Southern and followed with 14 points and nine rebounds at Barry on Saturday.
