Tritons Edge Quincy, Blow Out Lake Superior at The Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team snapped a four-game skid on Wednesday by taking a pair of wins at The Spring Games, winning a pitchers' duel over Quincy (Ill.), 2-0, before run-ruling Lake Superior State (Mich.), 15-4.

In the first game of the day, Eckerd got a two-run single by Nikole Van Gennep in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. EC had been held hitless by Quincy starter Meghan Quirk until that inning, but Kaycie Duncan broke up Quirk's no-hit bid with a single that loaded the bases after Emily Knox drew a walk to lead off the inning and Carrie Shere reached on a fielder's choice.

That sequence set the stage for Van Gennep's single that put the Tritons on top. Matching Quirk in the circle, Van Gennep (6-3) then worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh as the freshman completed a two-hit shutout.

There was no shortage of offense in the second game as the Eckerd (11-5-1) exploded for 12 runs in the first inning alone against Lake Superior State. The Tritons sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning, coming away with 10 hits as both Shere and Van Gennep had two hits each before the Lakers had a chance to come to bat.

EC scored three more runs in the second inning on an RBI single from Duncan and a two-RBI single from Van Gennep.

The Tritons finished game two with 18 hits. Van Gennep and Kiley King were both a perfect 3-for-3 while Shere, Duncan and Janna Gaburo each had two hits. Duncan, Van Gennep and Chelsea Armstrong all had three RBIs.

Gaburo (5-2) earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs over 3-1/3 innings before Grace Willeck worked the final 1-2/3 innings.

Eckerd opens play in the Sunshine State Conference this weekend, hosting Saint Leo on Saturday at 5:00 PM and on Sunday at 1:00 PM for a double-header.
