Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. - Last weekend, the Eckerd softball team handed an unbeaten team its first loss.
This weekend, the Tritons handed a team its first conference loss after closing out a three-game series with a 2-0 win over Rollins College. The Tars won the first game of the day, 9-1.
Eckerd (13-11-1, 2-4 SSC) got another stellar pitching performance from
Nikole Van Gennep in the finale and another homerun by
Carrie Shere to lift the team to the win. Shere provided the only scoring of the game for either team via a two-run shot (4) in the top of the sixth inning.
That was more than enough for Van Gennep (8-7), who scattered seven hits over seven innings while stranding seven runners for her second shutout of the season. She also went 2-for-3 from the plate in the game.
The Tritons had a chance to score in the second inning after a single by Van Gennep followed by a walk drawn by
Chelsea Armstrong and a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position with one out. However, Rollins starter Niki Fogle got stranded both with a groundout and a pop-up to end the inning.
Rollins moved a runner to third base with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but Van Gennep coaxed a pair of pop-ups to get out of the inning. The Tars didn't get a runner past second the rest of the way, and Van Gennep retired the final six batters she faced.
In the opener, the Tars (18-4-1, 5-1 SSC) got to Eckerd starter
Janna Gaburo (5-4) early with six runs in the first two innings. EC scored its only run in the top of the third after a pair of errors on the same play allowed
Dana Paul to score from second.
Rollins added three more runs in the sixth to complete the run-rule victory, the first loss for Eckerd this season via the run rule.
Kaycie Duncan had two hits in the opener while
Rachael Luckett and
Kiley King both had one.
Eckerd returns to the field on Wednesday, heading to Clermont to participate in The Spring Games against Bentley University at 11:00 AM and Southern Connecticut State at 1:00 PM.
