Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. - Heavy rainfall shortened day two of the Eckerd Spring Invitational, cutting short the Tritons' first game of the day at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
The Tritons ended the game in their first tie since 2010, deadlocked at 3-3 with Chadron State (Neb.) when play was stopped.
Eckerd scored twice in the bottom of the second and once in the bottom of the third, both times tying the game after the Eagles (1-1-1) had plated the same amount in the top of the inning.
Emily Knox delivered first for the Tritons, ripping a two-out, two-run single in the second to bring in
Nikole Van Gennep and
Dana Paul and tie the game at 2-2. One inning later,
Chelsea Armstrong's fielder's choice grounder scored Van Gennep from third to answer after CSC retook the lead in the top of the inning.
Eckerd had chances to do more damage but stranded nine runners, including leaving the bases loaded in both the second and third innings.
In addition to her two-run single, Knox saved two runs from scoring in the fourth with a diving catch in shallow right field to end the inning.
Janna Gaburo performed well in her first career start, scattering seven hits over five innings and allowing two earned runs while dealing the the muddy and wet conditions.
The Tritons had five hits but showed patience at the plate in drawing eight walks. Paul had a pair of singles while
Carrie Shere,
Kaycie Duncan and
Rachael Luckett all drew a pair of walks.
EC's second game of the day against Nova Southeastern was rained out.
Eckerd returns to action on Sunday to conclude the invitational, taking on Lynn University at 9:00 AM and Florida Southern at 11:30 AM.
