ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Close games have been a theme this season for the Eckerd women's basketball team, and tonight should be no different as the Tritons host Rollins College at 5:30 PM.
Â
ABOUT THE TARS- Rollins snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 71-57 win over Embry-Riddle. The short skid came after a big win on the road over Florida Tech on January 13. The Tars enter today's contest a half-game behind Eckerd, so a win today for Rollins would flip the two teams in the conference standings.
- Julia Ingler is the only player averaging in double figures at 11.4 points per game. She's led Rollins in scoring in five of her last six games including a 25-point performance in the win over Florida Tech.
- Rollins goes strong to the offensive boards, ranking second in the conference with 14.2 offensive rebounds per game. The Tritons had difficulty keeping an aggressive Florida Tech team off the offensive glass in both meeting this season, and it will be imperative for EC to block out on the defensive end to limit second-chance opportunities.
ABOUT THE TRITONS- Senior guard
Margaret Sundberg has been hot lately, scoring in double figures in her last four games while averaging a team-best 13.5 points per game during the stretch. She's shot 50 percent or better from 3-point range in three of those games.
- In Eckerd's last three losses, the team has been done in by a bad 10-minute stretch in the middle of the game. In losses to Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Tech, the Tritons struggled in the second quarter, outscored by a combined 29-7 in those two contests. The third quarter was the bane against Barry after the Bucs outscored EC, 13-4. If Eckerd can avoid having a cold quarter tonight, the chances of winning increase dramatically.
- The Tritons have relied on defense and controlling the pace of the game for the majority of the season. Eckerd is third in the SSC in scoring defense (59.7 ppg), second in field goal percentage defense (36.0 percent) and first in 3-point percentage defense (28.8 percent).
- With the regular season winding down, Eckerd will spend most of February away from home. After tonight's game, four of the team's remaining six games will be on the road.
LOOKING BACKThe two teams met in Winter Park on November 24, where the Tritons jumped ahead early and earned a 73-59 win over the Tars. Eckerd led by as many as 21 points in the first half on its way to the victory.Â
Margaret Sundberg netted a career-high 17 points while
Anna Deegan and
Ashley Folsom each scored 12. The defense limited Rollins to just 28.1 percent shooting from the floor.
