ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's basketball team faces a tall task today when the Tritons visit conference leader Nova Southeastern today at 2:00 PM.
Â
ABOUT THE SHARKS- Nova Southeastern is working to clinch the regular season conference title, entering today at 12-2 in SSC play and a 1.5-game lead over Florida Tech. A win over Eckerd today would clinch the conference title and top seed in the conference tournament.
- The Sharks are the only conference team represented in the national rankings, coming in at No. 17 in the coaches poll and No. 20 in the media poll.
- Today is senior day for NSU as the team's four seniors - Molly Blomer, Ida Krogh, Monaye Merritt and Alexis Murphy. The Sharks are looking for the 300th win in program history.
- Eckerd will need to find a way to contain Kayla Wright, who dropped 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting in the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The Sharks lead the conference in scoring offense at 74.3 points per game.
ABOUT THE TRITONS- Eckerd is fighting for position in the conference standings, heading into today's slate tied for fifth in the SSC with Tampa at 6-7. Both teams have a 1.5-game lead over Rollins.
-
Victoria Vine had a big game against NSU in the first matchup with 24 points. The Tritons will look for another big day from her along with
Margaret Sundberg and
Ashley Folsom, the team's top two scorers.
- Sundberg has become Eckerd's iron woman, playing an average of 36.3 minutes per game. Only Tampa's Juliana Cavallaro stays on the floor more than Sundberg. The senior leads the team in 3-point shooting with 40 3's made while making 41.7 percent.
- The work on the boards of
Kacie Juday could play a major role in today's game. Juday leads the team in rebounding with 6.9 per game, ranking third in the conference. Eckerd out-rebounded NSU by a slight 33-29 margin in the first contest.
LOOKING BACKEckerd played an outstanding game and had a chance to win on the final possession, but a
Victoria Vine 3-pointer was off the mark as Nova Southeastern escaped St. Petersburg with a 64-63 win on January 6.
