Box Score 2 LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team got another pair of strong performances in the circle as the Tritons swept Warner (Fla.) University on Saturday afternoon, 7-1 and 2-1, for their fifth and sixth wins in a row.
Nikole Van Gennep (3-1) scattered eight hits over seven innings in game one while
Janna Gaburo (3-0) worked 5.2 innings in game two before Van Gennep came in to close out the sweep.
Eckerd (6-1-1) took the lead in the top of the third in game one after
Emily Knox led off the inning with a single followed by
Carrie Shere reaching on an error. A double-steal moved them both into scoring position and
Chelsea Armstrong's sacrifice fly drove in Knox for the game's first run.
Kaycie Duncan followed with an RBI groundout to bring in Shere to make it 2-0.
The score remained there until the fifth inning, when the Tritons scored five times thanks to a string of five straight hits. Duncan's two-run single got things going, followed by a two-RBI double by
Rachael Luckett and a run-scoring double by Van Gennep.
Shere, Armstrong and Van Gennep all had two hit in the opener while Duncan had three RBIs.
The Tritons didn't produce a big inning in game two, but they didn't have to as Gaburo held the Royals (1-3) to one run on six hits before giving way to Van Gennep with two outs in the sixth inning.
Shere broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI triple that proved to be the difference in the game. She finished game two with a pair of hits as she did in the opener while Luckett also posted two hits.
Eckerd returns to the field on Tuesday, February 16, traveling to face Southeastern (Fla.) in Lakeland at 2:00 PM.
