Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After two strong performances last weekend, the Eckerd women's basketball team continued its momentum with a 78-49 home victory over conference opponent Lynn University.
Though the Fighting Knights (4-3, 1-2 SSC) made their way onto the scoreboard first, the Tritons promptly responded with 16 unanswered points.
"I think we really set the tone early defensively," EC head coach Paul Honsinger said. "Our containment was good, our rebounding was good and I really think that set the tone for us. We had a big first quarter."
Eckerd's first-quarter run was finally broken by a Lynn free throw, but the Tritons finished the first quarter with a 10-0 run - including back-to-back 3-pointers by Sarah Ammons - to take a 26-3 lead.
Defensively, Eckerd made things difficult on the Fighting Knights who shot a paltry 12.9 percent from the floor in the first half.
Eckerd (5-2, 2-0 SSC) continued to stretch its lead in the third quarter with much of its offensive production led by Kacie Juday and Victoria Vine, who combined for 17 of the team's 23 points
The Tritons maintained a lead of 21 points or more for the remainder of the game and led by as many as 30.
"They [Lynn] have a lot new players," Honsinger said. "They were a little shorthanded tonight but you've got to give them credit, they kept playing."
Vine and Brooke Juday led the team in scoring tonight with 14 points each while Armi Anttila added a career-high 13 points. Ada Yalcin and Brooke Juday pulled down six rebounds each and Yalcin dished out a season-best eight assists.
The win keeps Eckerd a half-game behind Nova Southeastern in the Sunshine State Conference standings. EC is one of only three teams without a conference loss.
"I was as pleased with our offensive execution over 40 minutes as much as I was our defense," Honsinger said. "We were on all cylinders tonight."
The Tritons hit the road this weekend, facing conference opponent Rollins College. Eckerd will tip-off at 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon.
