ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College sand volleyball team hosted Carson Newman for a double header on Tuesday taking the first match, 3-2, before dropping the second match, 5-0.
The No. 1 slot consisted of
Tjasa Kotnik and
Gabriella Reis Guimaraes who went three sets with Rachel Harper and Jenna Wilson. The pair of Tritons fell in set one before taking sets two and three, 23-21 and 18-16 respectively.
Battling from the No. 2 slot was the tandem of
Katie Arnette and
Ali McAlvany who also went three sets taking the final two, 22-20 and 15-9, to take the match.
Madison Whiting and
Emily Carpenter won in the No. 3 slot in straight sets, 21-19 and 21-10. The third victory clinched the win for Eckerd.
The duo of
Savanna Cary and
Jordan Trimble fell in back to back sets to the Eagle's Anna Paton and Taylor Lowe, 21-12, 21-16.
Holly Buresh and
Mackenzie Redner battled hard in both sets in the No. 5 slot falling 21-18 in set one before pushing set two to extra points, but coming up just short, 25-23.
The second half of the double header got underway with Kotnik and Reis Guimaraes falling in three tough sets at the No. 1 position, 11-21, 21-15 and 8-15. Buresh and Redner were also downed in three sets from the No. 5 spot.
Arnette and McAlvany dropped back to back sets to Kristen Pickett and Sara Fairley from the No. 2 slot, 21-12 and 21-15. Cary and Trimble fell victim in straight sets to the Eagles as the No. 4 seed, 21-13 and 21-10.
The No. 3 position consisted of Carpenter and Whiting who fell just shy of completing the comeback in set one, 21-18. Pushing set two into extra points, the duo gave everything they had, but lost 26-24. Carson Newman claimed the 5-0 sweep and the split of the double header.
Eckerd (2-7) will take on the College of Charleston in Siesta Key on Friday with the match beginning at 4 pm.
