Oberer and Hay Make History on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team's 21 game win streak came to an end as the Tritons spilt with the Panthers, falling in game one 8-7, before taking game two, 2-1, on Saturday.

The Tritons win streak may have been derailed but the team continues to break records, tying the single season win record at 27, a record set just one season ago.

The latest milestone to crumble was broken by junior Kara Oberer when she recorded the 30th home run of her career in game two. She eclipsed the two-decade long benchmark previously set by Sherry Howell and her 29 home runs (1990-93). Oberer moved into second place all-time in RBIs with 95, just seven shy of Howell. With the home run, the junior also moved up to third in career runs scored (104).

Amber Hay picked up her 16th win of the year in game two, breaking the single season win record, held by teammate Dixson. The senior went the distance for the Tritons scattering five hits while gathering two strike outs.

Game One – Florida Tech 8, Eckerd 7

In game one, the Tritons and Panthers battled through nine innings of play before FIT took home the win.

After giving up an early four runs, starter Erin Dixson settled in tossing four scoreless innings for the Tritons. Hay was tagged with the loss as she came in for the final three innings, falling to 15-3 on the year.

Down by four, in the top of the third Sydney Dinelli sent a single to left field, plating Brittany Mitchell and Carrie Shere. The Tritons evened the score in the fourth when Mitchell grabbed an RBI and Kiana Sladicki crossed home plate off a Panther error.

EC took the lead in the sixth when Dixson crushed her ninth home run of the year to deep center. The Panthers knotted it up in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

After taking a two run lead in the top of the ninth, EC was unable to hold on, falling to the Panthers, 8-7.

Dixson and Mitchell each finished game one going 2 for 3 with one run scored.

Game Two – Eckerd 2, Florida Tech 1

Runs were at an ultimate premium with the Tritons and Panthers concluding the final game of the series.

Oberer stepped to the plate in the first and launched her team leading 10th home run of the year, plating Shere who led off the game with a double.

The Panthers would tack on one run in the bottom half of the inning and both teams would remain quiet the rest of the game. With her defense playing solid behind her, Hay shut down the opposing offense the rest of the way out to grab the win.

Shere, Oberer, and Dixson each collected two hits while Hay nabbed one.

The historic Eckerd (27-3, 8-1) season will continue on Friday with the team playing host to No. 15 Rollins College (20-3, 6-3). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
