Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team continued their hot streak as they picked up their 25
th win of the season, defeating Merrimack College, 4-2 and 8-0 on Tuesday night.
The Tritons (25-2, 6-0) have won an NCAA leading 20 games in a row after bringing out the brooms to sweep the Warriors (3-5 overall). The Massachusetts-based Warriors flew down to the sunshine state to start off the 2015 season.
Erin Dixson remains undefeated from the circle as she got the start in game one. The senior struck out two batters while scattering five hits and picking up her ninth win.
Senior
Amber Hay picked up her 14
th win of the season and remains No. 1 in the nation in wins. The senior toed the rubber for game two and scattered a mere three hits while giving up one walk and grabbing her sixth shutout. Hay was backed by the Eckerd defense that shined in the field committing no errors.
Game 1 – Eckerd 4, Merrimack 2The Warriors jumped out to an early lead on the Tritons in top of the third. EC answered back in the bottom half of the inning taking advantage of Merrimack errors.
Sydney Dinelli drove a laser up the middle that the Warriors misplayed, scoring
Kara Oberer and
Brittany Mitchell.
The Merrimack bats came alive in the top of the fifth as they knotted up the score.
Eckerd took the lead in the sixth with two outs as Mitchell earned a bases loaded walk to bring home
Kaycie Duncan. The Tritons added one more insurance run off the bat of
Carrie Shere who grabbed an infield single, scoring Rachel Luckett.
The Tritons pounded nine hits in the opener against Merrimack's Haley Currie including two each from Shere, Duncan, and Paul.
Game 2 – Eckerd 8, Merrimack 0Eckerd ended game two early as they drove in eight unanswered runs on the Warriors. Off to a slow start, the Tritons collected six of the runs in the final two innings of the game.
Paul singled through the right side, putting the Tritons on the board as Duncan and
Chelsea Armstrong crossed the plate off of an errant throw from the Warriors.
In to pinch run for Dixson,
Kiana Sladicki was able to round the bases off of two passed balls to grab the Tritons third run of the game. Paul legged out an infield single and later scored off a deep triple down the right field line by Mitchell. Shere grabbed an RBI as well off a rip to center field.
Armstrong grabbed the first triple of her young career as she sent a liner to right field, driving in the final two runs of the game.
Paul was a combined 4 for 5 at the plate with three runs batted in and one run scored during the twin bill while behind the dish for the Tritons.
The Tritons will get back to SSC play as they travel to Florida Tech on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
