Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A historic moment in the history of the Eckerd College softball program happened Sunday afternoon as the Tritons brought out the brooms to sweep Florida Southern, 6-5 and 8-1 in the final two games of the series.
Eckerd completed their second ever Sunshine State Conference sweep in school history as they downed FSC improving their record to 18-2, undoubtedly the best start in school history.
The Tritons were clicking on all cylinders today as they were on top of every aspect of the game. Yet another freshman came through for Eckerd as
Dana Paul ripped a walk-off double to take home the victory in game one.
Game 1 – Eckerd 6, Florida Southern 5Kaycie Duncan drove a ball to center field scoring
Carrie Shere pulling the game even at 1-1 after the Mocs got out to an early start. Hay then ripped her second double of the year and was brought around the pond off a massive homerun from
Erin Dixson giving EC a 4-1 advantage.
An untimely error by the Tritons in the third along with Florida Southern batting tied the score up at 4-4.
Florida Southern grabbed the lead over EC in the top of the seventh as they pushed one run across.
With the rally caps on and runners on first and second Paul slammed the ball to the outfield fence scoring
Kirby Parnell and
Chelsea Armstrong to take home the 6-5 victory.
Amber Hay toed the rubber for game one and picked up her ninth victory of the year going the distance for the Tritons and striking out five.
Dixson finished game one going 2 for 3 at the plate and driving home three RBI's while Paul and
Brittany Mitchell each tallied two hits apiece as well.
Game 2 – Eckerd 8, Florida Southern 1 Eckerd bats were on fire in game two as the Tritons rocked 12 hits off of Florida Southern's Brandi Jones.
Kara Oberer gave EC an early lead as she launched her seventh home run of the year scoring
Carrie Shere who reached base off an error.
Oberer singled to start off the bottom of the third inning and took two bases off a single from
Sydney Dinelli. Duncan then sent a deep fly ball to left field to score Oberer.
Up by three, Mitchell grabbed an RBI as she ripped a ball through the right side to score
Kiana Sladicki who was in pinch running for Dixson.
EC tacked on two more runs in the fifth off the bats of Hay and Paul to go up 6-1.With the game already in their hands, the Tritons added two more insurance runs in the sixth and shut down the Mocs in the seventh to take home the victory.
Dixson improved to 6-0 on the season as she manned the circle for the complete game victory. Dixson was backed up by flawless defense from the Tritons. Duncan, Martinez, and Parnell each made ESPN worthy plays to get the Tritons out of some tough jams.
Oberer finished game two 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBI's and three runs scored. Dinelli, Hay, and Dixson each nabbed two hits of their own while Shere, Mitchell, and
Rachael Luckett grabbed one.
Eckerd will head to Warner University on Wednesday for a non-conference double header with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
